CDI publishes landmark study into qualifications and professionalism

In 2024, the CDI commissioned the International Centre for Guidance Studies at the University of Derby to carry out research into the current routes for people to enter the career development profession and progress within the sector.

The research comprised stakeholder interviews, a survey across the profession with 644 responses and roundtable discussions. The resulting report and recommendations were presented to the CDI Board at the end of January 2025.

This resulted in a series of projects being defined by the CDI to work in collaboration with key organisations and individuals across the profession, beginning with a review of the Qualification in Career Development and exploring ways to enhance the Register of Career Development Professionals.

The research has also informed the CDI’s 2030 Strategy, which is due to be launched towards the end of 2025, and so the full and executive reports from the research have now been published. In addition, Hannah Blake and Tristram Hooley – who carried out the research along with Ka Tung Lai – summarised their work in an article in October’s Career Matters magazine.

This is a significant piece of research that underlines the CDI’s commitment to working across the profession to enhance standards, make the profession attractive to new entrants and increase recognition of the valuable work members undertake for clients.
