Careers advisers urged to champion construction roles amid Welsh industry skills crisis

A leading Welsh housebuilder has called for urgent action to promote construction careers, warning that the sector faces long-term decline without a stronger talent pipeline. Edenstone Group’s Martin Taylor emphasised the pivotal role of careers advisers in shifting perceptions so young people consider roles in the built environment.

While construction offers diverse and rewarding career paths - from bricklaying and surveying to project management and sustainability - many students remain unaware of the opportunities available. Taylor stressed that ‘misconceptions about the industry’s relevance and stability are contributing to a widening skills gap’, with fewer young people entering vocational training or apprenticeships.

Taylor advocates for stronger collaboration between schools, careers advisers and employers to ensure construction is presented as a viable and future-proof option. He also pointed to the sector’s role in addressing housing shortages and delivering net-zero targets as key motivators for the next generation.
