AI in Wales: Skills, Practice and Workforce Change online event: 14th October
Artificial Intelligence is already reshaping how organisations deliver services, support clients and develop their workforce. To help leaders and practitioners across Wales navigate this fast‑moving landscape, The next Professional Forum hosted by CDI Cymru explores AI in Wales: Skills, Practice and Workforce Change on Wednesday 14 October, 1.30pm–3.30pm.
The event brings together expert speakers from Welsh Government, higher education and Careers Wales to explore the opportunities, challenges and practical realities of AI adoption across the careers, skills and employability sector.
Emma Escott and Isobel Bowen from the Welsh Government Office for AI will introduce the new National AI Governance Framework, outlining how it was developed through extensive collaboration and testing across public services. They will discuss leadership responsibilities, governance expectations and the workforce capabilities needed for responsible AI use, as well as insights from trade union consultations and social partnership engagement. Their session will also consider the cultural shift required to build confidence and reduce stigma around AI adoption.
Dr Tom Staunton from the International Centre for Guidance Studies, University of Derby, will examine how AI is influencing career development practice and professional identity. Drawing on his doctoral research into how young people use technology during career transitions, he will explore how clients are already incorporating digital tools - including AI - into their decision‑making. Tom will highlight emerging ethical considerations and share examples of how AI can support practice, such as note‑taking and reflective work.
Steve Gurnell from Careers Wales will provide practical insights from the organisation’s AI and Copilot journey. He will outline how AI is being used to enhance service delivery, improve efficiency and support advisers in their day‑to‑day work. His session will share lessons learned from four innovative pilots and highlight real‑world examples of how AI is already making a difference for customers and practitioners in Wales.
This forum offers an opportunity for CDI members and partners in Wales to deepen their understanding of how AI is shaping career development, skills and employability services. Attendees will be able to explore implications for workforce planning, governance and professional practice, and exchange experiences and ideas with colleagues from across the sector.
