AI and the Welsh Economy: Implications for careers advisers

A fascinating Plenary debate took place on 24th September on the Welsh Government’s recent research report: AI and the Welsh Economy - Can Welsh androids dream of electric sheep?

AI adoption is accelerating, yet many Welsh businesses lack confidence and practical support to implement it. Barriers include limited digital skills, financial constraints, and uncertainty around regulation. Advisers will need to help clients understand AI’s growing role in the workplace and prepare for evolving job expectations.

By 2035, over 10 million UK workers may have AI-integrated roles, with nearly 4 million directly in AI. While some firms report job creation, others cite job displacement—especially in administrative roles, often held by women. Concerns also include algorithmic bias in recruitment and AI-driven workplace surveillance.

The Welsh Government plans to introduce AI and digital skills in every secondary school and develop centres of excellence to support a just transition. Careers professionals will play a vital role in guiding individuals through these changes, ensuring inclusive access to emerging opportunities and helping clients build resilience in a tech-driven labour market.
