Advancing social mobility – best practice for universities
Sutton Trust has published a new guide on best practice for universities to advance social mobility.
‘Advancing Social Mobility: A best practice guide for universities’ updates their previous guide based on more recent evidence and practical examples. Topics include widening participation and outreach, admissions, transition, student success, careers and postgraduate study.
The guide makes a number of recommendations, including; starting with defining the barrier – or problem – the student faces; build sustainable outreach pathways that are fairly targeted; make admissions ambitious, transparent and easy to navigate; and build student success into the core university experience.
To genuinely achieve social mobility goals, universities must see it as something that the institution is behind, not just left to widening participation teams.
