A good year for young people in Scotland applying for university
A record number of young people in Scotland have secured a place at university. This is against a backdrop of a falling demographic for this age range and increasing competition between institutions to fill their places.
It has also been a good year for the widening participation agenda, with an increase of more than 5% in those from the poorest backgrounds getting into university. However, the number of over-25-year-olds going to university has fallen again.
Meanwhile several higher education institutions in Scotland continue to face challenges to their financial viability, while exploring redundancies and voluntary severance packages to reduce their staff costs.
