Meet Lis Macguire

Lis swapped a career in ancient history to help people carve out their futures.

My Mission: To help people move beyond barriers and see careers not as ladders, but as landscapes to be navigated with curiosity, courage, and creativity.

Lis is the founder of Sunrise Career Guidance and creator of the Shape of Career cards

How did your career in careers begin?

It started with my love for history - I studied Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Liverpool. I was the first in my family to go to university, and I chose the course more by accident than design. But learning about mythology and ancient societies gave me insight into human experience, which has stayed with me ever since. I began my career in admin and marketing, then as a proposal manager at a global engineering firm. After having my first child, I started a CV writing business. A client came to me needing more than a CV; they needed clarity and direction. I realised I needed to train further to give people what they really needed, and that's when I pursued my MA and Level 7 QCG.

What challenges have you faced?

Self-employment brings constant uncertainty but I’ve learned to trust the process. When I show up fully, do my best, and stay authentic, more work always comes. The freedom and growth are worth it. Another challenge was realising that people often see careers as linear. That’s one reason I created the Shape of Career cards - to show that careers aren’t ladders; they’re landscapes.

What do you love most about your work?

Helping people move beyond barriers. I see career development as a kind of glass elevator - a way out of constraining life situations. Through education, training, reflection, and hope, people can shift their stories. I work in schools, with charities, and with private clients, and I also design and facilitate workshops. Every day looks different, and I love that. Whether I’m shipping out card sets or helping a student unpick their next steps, I get to make a meaningful impact.

What’s your personal work philosophy?

Courage. I try to say yes, even when I’m scared. I push myself beyond my comfort zone and always feel stronger for it. I also believe in trust - the client knows more about their life than I ever will. My role is to listen deeply, reflect insight, and support them as they move forward.

Who or what has shaped your career?

My Grannie. She gave me a gift that helped fund my career development training, and that investment unlocked so many doors. But my biggest influence is my mum. She studied for her own qualifications right in front of me and fought hard for my education. She showed me that you don’t wait for opportunity; you build it. She taught me to blow up the opportunity structure and make something new.

What does a typical day look like?

No two days are the same. I might be delivering guidance in schools, writing CVs, mentoring clients, creating workshop resources, or packaging up Shape of Career card orders. I also spend time developing new ideas and reflecting on how to make career development more accessible and inclusive.

Favourite career theories?

I really connect with Careership Theory and Chaos Theory - both acknowledge the unpredictability of career paths and help people embrace uncertainty with creativity. They remind us that we don’t need to have it all figured out; we just need to take the next step with awareness.

Where is the profession heading?

I’m optimistic. We’re starting to see more recognition of diverse career paths and more inclusive approaches to guidance. There’s still work to be done - especially in showing the world that career development isn’t just about jobsit’s about identity, empowerment, and transformation.

What advice would you give to new CDPs?

My advice to new CDPs is to try out different areas of the sector to see what fits. Build a network of CDPs - they're some of the most generous, thoughtful professionals I know. Be curious, reflective, and open to learning, and don’t be afraid to bring your whole self to the work.

Final reflections?

Career development is more than a profession; it’s a calling. You’ll never be bored because every client brings a new story. And with each interaction, you’re planting seeds of confidence, direction, and possibility.
