OECD’s Education at a Glance report highlights UK variances in education

Having hosted the UK launch of the OECD’s Education at a Glance report, HEPI Director Nick Hillman summarises 10 of the most interesting findings of the report for the UK, and especially England.

The full report is 541 pages long so these headlines are very handy for a quick insight into the state of UK education compared to other OECD countries.

Key findings include:
  • The NEET challenge is bad and getting worse, especially among men – and the UK is performing worst out of the developing countries for earnings for low-skilled adults.
  • The UK has a high success rate at higher education, mainly due to a low drop-out rate.
  • Per student spending on higher education is around half that for the OECD in the UK.
  • There is one international student for every three home students in the UK, but only one for every 13 home students across the OECD, showing the UK’s success at attracting overseas students.
  • The gap between men and women gaining tertiary education is bigger and growing in the UK compared to the OECD.
