After Results Day - Tools For Your Next Steps

Digital Guide to Next Steps

Whether you've just received your A-Level results or are simply considering your next move, navigating the path ahead can feel daunting. CDI has compiled a list of the best digital resources and expert services to help you explore your options and find the perfect next steps.

Getting Expert Advice

Sometimes, talking to a real person is the best way to get clarity. These services offer impartial guidance to help you make informed decisions.

National Careers Service (England): If you're in England, the National Careers Service is your go-to resource. You can call their helpline on 0800 100 900 or use their webchat for personalised advice. This is the same number as the Exam Results Helpline, perfect for students exploring their options after receiving results.

Public Careers Services (Devolved Nations): The UK's devolved nations have their own fantastic resources:

  • Scotland: My World of Work, hosted by Skills Development Scotland, offers a wealth of information.

  • Wales: Careers Wales is your hub for information on jobs, courses, and apprenticeships.

  • Northern Ireland: The Careers Service is provided by the Department for the Economy.

Your School or College: Don't forget to lean on the people you already know. The careers adviser at your school or college is a valuable source of guidance and can help you interpret your results and plan your next steps.

The CDI Careers Register: For additional, personal support, the Career Development Institute (CDI) maintains a register of qualified career development professionals. These professionals are committed to the CDI's Code of Ethics, to offer impartial and informed support, and many of them offer private services to individuals.

Exploring Your Options

Not sure if university is the right choice, or curious about what a gap year could offer? These resources can help you explore a variety of pathways.

UCAS: While primarily known for university applications, UCAS is also a great place to learn about apprenticeships and other options. It provides comprehensive information on everything from Clearing to taking a gap year. A Higher Technical Qualification such as an HND or foundation degree can provide a shorter, more direct route into employment, whilst also keeping open the option of 'topping up' to a full undergraduate degree. You can search for Higher Technical Qualifications here -  https://www.ucas.com/applying/you-apply/what-and-where-study/choosing-course/higher-technical-qualifications

Apprenticeships: Thinking about earning while you learn? The government's apprenticeships website is a fantastic place to start, offering an extensive list of opportunities. You can also check out resources like Not Going To Uni and GetMyFirstJob for more listings and advice.

Gap Years & Work Abroad: A gap year can be a fantastic way to gain new skills and experiences. Websites like GoAbroad.com, Plan My Gap Year, and Projects Abroad UK offer a range of opportunities.

Temporary & Entry-Level Work: If you want to gain experience and earn money without a long-term commitment, temporary work could be the answer. Major job sites like Indeed Flex and Adecco specialize in this area. Youth Employment UK lists popular entry-level job sites like E4S

Volunteering: Not only is volunteering fulfilling, but it's also a brilliant way to gain valuable experience. Check out the NCVO, one of the UK's largest hubs for volunteering opportunities.

Resources for Parents & Support Staff

For Parents: Websites like The Parents' Guide to University and FE News offer helpful guides and tips specifically for parents. And the Talking Futures website is designed to help parents and carers support their children with technical education pathways: https://www.talkingfutures.org.uk/

For Schools & Colleges: If you're a school or college looking to employ a careers adviser, the CDI offers a free, comprehensive recruitment guide to help you streamline your process.
