Research is foundational to the career development sector, helping us identify what constitutes good practice, but also as an important and fulfilling aspect of career development practice. Speakers will share insights from their own research journeys to and explore what this means for the variety of ways in which practitioners can engage with research, including postgraduate study, service evaluation, and self-directed research amongst others.
Learning outcomes from this session will include:
• Identifying your research-relevant transferable skills.
• Reflecting on practical considerations when undertaking research, including ethics and possibilities for collaboration.
• Evaluating options for postgraduate study and other routes into doing research as part of your career.
• Explore how to meet the Career Development National Occupational Standard, CLDCD17 Plan and undertake research through your employment.
Dr Fiona Christie is a careers professional who has moved into an academic career combining research and lecturing. At Manchester Metropolitan University, she is a Senior Lecturer in the department of People and Performance and a member of the Research Centre for Decent Work and Productivity. Her research and teaching explore career development, graduate employability, higher education, young people and decent work.
Dr Emma Bolger has over 20 years' experience working in education and careers as a lecturer and careers practitioner. Emma'a book The Career Professional's Guide to Research was published by in September 2025. Her work focuses on equality and inclusion, diversity and accessibility.
