Understanding and Practising Narrative Career Counselling

12/07/2016 09:30 - 15:45 View

As reflective career professionals we are always looking for new ways of working with clients to bring out the best in them and empower them to move forward in their career journey. This new professional practice day focuses on understanding and practising a relatively new approach: narrative career counselling. Egan (2013) tells us that we need to give the client space to ‘tell their story’. Within narrative careers work the aim is to re-call stories that have meaning in the present, related to the issue a client brings to the careers practitioner. Used in a career counselling context, the telling helps to develop a sense of self –a career biography. Clients will not expect to be asked to talk about themselves and their interests in this creative way and many may not expect their ‘stories’ to be valued. The aim of telling stories in narrative career counselling is to encourage divergent thinking within a safe transitional space, in a search for more meaningful career decision-making.
