Trends in 2023's A level results

The headline news for 2023's A level results in England and Wales was the return of grading to 2019 levels. with plenty of media outlets raising the concern that young people taking results this year will be disadvantaged.

In the end, those getting into their first or insurance choice university was almost the same as 2022 (91% vs 92% and higher than 88% in 2019) and the number of young people who had received free school meals getting into university in 2023 was 60% up on 2019 levels.

The Guardian delved behind these headlines to explore the other trends within this year's A level results, including a shift away from the arts towards sociology and business. Meanwhile language subjects continue to languish, at their lowest level since at least 2010.

The gender gap has narrowed after two years where girls did significantly better than boys - primarily as they tend to perform better at coursework, a bigger factor in grading during the pandemic.
