Sub-Committee on Education, Skills and the Economy - Report

26 07.16

The full report on Careers education, information, advice and guidance is also on the website. The CDI submitted evidence to this Sub-Committee and is pleased that many of our recommendations have been adopted.

In summary the report recommends:

  • Incentivise schools to offer careers education
  • Include specific judgement on careers provision in Ofsted’s inspection framework
  • Improve destination data
  • Identify a single Minister and Department responsible for careers provision at all ages
  • Merge the Quality in Careers and the matrix Standards
  • Ensure that careers professionals hold level 6 qualifications as a minimum
  • Re-introduce meaningful work experience at Key Stage 4.

The CDI is meeting with Careers England and other key parties to discuss our response. One area of concern is the recommendation on the merger of the Quality in Careers Awards and matrix standard, not least because the Award providers are all independent companies and any integration would be complex and would need to be handled with great sensitivity. The report also raises questions about the future location of the NCS, suggesting that this could be administered through the Careers & Enterprise Company.
