Message from David Morgan, Chief Executive, CDI

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself after officially starting as the Chief Executive on 1st May. I joined the CDI in April and have spent the past few weeks getting to know the team, the CDI Board and some of the many people who work with us to support our members. Jan Ellis remains with the CDI until the end of May, completing key projects and continuing to support my transition into the role, and I’d like to say a huge thank you to Jan for all her help since I arrived.

I’m delighted to have joined the CDI and I look forward to continuing to build on the achievements of Jan and the team. Working in education over the past decade – initially at City & Guilds then AQA – I arrive with some appreciation of the value professional career guidance brings to individuals, the economy and society. I also attended the UK Career Development Awards before I joined and was struck by the inspiring stories and passion of CDI members across all areas of the careers sector.

It’s so important that great careers guidance is available alongside learning and employment opportunities, to help people build their self-understanding, identify the right move for them and effectively manage their careers into the future. I have recent experience of this, working with an excellent career coach after I left AQA who encouraged me to properly consider where I wanted to focus in my career rather than rush into the next job. Without his support over the last few months I wouldn’t be in this role.

This role builds on many aspects of my previous work, from running training events and creating resources, to leading policy campaigns to raise awareness and engage people on key issues. At City & Guilds I worked to raise the profile of apprenticeships and skills, including a campaign with employers such as Jaguar Land Rover and YouTube influencers (including a pre-fame Joe Sugg) that engaged three million young people. At AQA, I was also responsible for Teachit – a provider of classroom resources – giving me experience of creating great services that meet the needs of a diverse membership.

Outside work I am married to Debbie and have two grown-up children who took very different paths that suited their individual learning style and career aspirations - my daughter graduating from university last year and my son completing his apprenticeship in software development. I am a Trustee of two environment charities and enjoy running, having completed five marathons. I’m also a Southampton FC season ticket holder – having sat through last season’s 9-0 drubbing on a cold, wet night.

My goal at the CDI is to enable our members across all the home nations to provide the highest standard of career development services to young people and adults. From recognised qualifications to continued professional training that evolves with the role, sharing the latest research, news and advice, providing opportunities to learn from each other and championing the career development profession, the CDI aims to add value to every member. I will work with the CDI team, Board, associates and wide range of partners to build on the excellent work to date - providing you with great support and continuing to raise the profile and recognition of the sector.
