The guidance / coaching paradigm

This month’s newsletter reflects one of the CDI’s themes at Annual Conference. For those who were not at the conference, it gives you a pointer to some of the materials. And if you were at conference, remember that attendance constitutes some 11 hours of CPD towards your annual total, which you can record on your personal record now.

Activities here are simply ideas and are not compulsory. You can choose to do some, all or none; it won’t affect your membership of the CDI whether you take up these ideas or not, although they do reflect good practice.

If you are on the Register then undertaking 25 hours of CPD each year is a condition of your registration.

If you are a member then undertaking CPD helps you to adhere to the Continuous Professional Development principle in the CDI Code of Ethics.

Each month, we will suggest CPD activities which will allow you to explore a topic, interact with others and create a reflective record in the Members’ Area of the CDI website. Simply choose the items and activities that suit your role and your style.

All the resources mentioned, and many more, are also accessible with direct links from the CPD Resources area of the Members’ Area of the CDI website. Resources are arranged according to the National Occupational Standards: Career Development (NOS:CD).

Guidance or coaching – does it matter?

That’s a difficult question which needs to be approached from two sides:

  1. What do we, in the career development profession, understand from the two different terms?
  2. Does the label influence our clients’ expectations?

What the questions have in common is that they worry us, career development professionals, more than they worry anyone else.  And that means that much of the relevant literature is within our own publications.


Conference plenary and workshop sessions

Almost all the conference contributions are available as Powerpoint presentations on the CDI website. Keynote 3 offers presentations by Dr Julia Yates, Liane Hambly and a school perspective from Justin Muston. Amongst the workshops, five have the term ‘coaching’ somewhere in their title, but also relevant are three workshops that address ‘resilience’ and ‘values’.

Talk to the presenters! Several of the conference presenters will be visiting the CDI’s LinkedIn group and are willing to respond to your questions about coaching, resilience and values in general, or their own presentation in particular. Several presenters addressed that ‘Does it matter?’ question, and you can pursue their ideas with them. Join the discussion, and add it to your CPD record.


Examining coaching

Not surprisingly, the CDI and its members have a track record in doing just this. What follows is a reminder of some important recent contributions:

The Career Coaching Handbook (Yates, 2015) covers theory and techniques. The first chapter, outlining career coaching, is available for preview on the publisher’s website.

CDI members have received the NICEC Journal as a benefit of membership since 2014. Back in 2013, NICEC devoted an issue of the Journal to career coaching, and have kindly made that issue available to CDI members. You can find NICEC Journal 30 (March 2013): New perspectives on career coaching in the CPD Resources section in the Members’ Area until the end of January.

Using our LinkedIn groups

The CDI has a LinkedIn group for all members (where you can contact conference contributors this month), and groups that are relevant for each home nation and for the Community of Interest groups. Start (or contribute to) a discussion; keep contributing for several days.

Recording and reflecting on CPD

Remember that reading research, talking and reflecting all count towards your CPD hours as long as you write a short reflective report in the My CPD section of your ‘My Portfolio’ record.


Useful Tips

Accessing the Members’ Area in order to record your CPD

To access this area click Login (at the top of the screen) and use your Members’ Area username (your email address) and password. Then click on Members’ Area, and choose Professional Register which includes the CPD Resources area and your personal CPD record. You can also access the Register directly by using the Professional Register link on the home page.

In September 2017 we launched an updated version of this part of the site which now provides a CPD recording system which is much easier to use.

The site includes the facility to Request a new password. Remember that for the system to work well, you need to keep your details up to date and ensure that CDI emails are not directed to your spam box.
