Inspiring Your Continuous Professional Development (CPD) - January 2023

31 01.23

Welcome to the CPD Newsletter for January 2023

CPD is important. It is central to our commitment to serve our clients well. CPD activity meets one of the principles of the CDI Code of Ethics for all CDI members. If you are also on the UK Register of Career Development Professionals there is a 25 hours per year requirement for undertaking and writing a short reflective report in your CPD Record.

Each monthly CPD newsletter focuses on a topic, and provides some suggestions for CPD activities, with links so that you can access or book the activity quickly.

This month: New Year additions to your practice toolkit

Your new year resolutions doubtless included some self-improvement intentions. A good resolution to add is keeping up with CPD, and there are few better ways than exploring and testing less familiar approaches to our work.

Clean language

Arising from a study of metaphor in interviews, ‘clean language’ seeks to include a minimum of presupposition in questions. By respecting the client’s model of the world, even when differing from the interviewer’s, respondents are more likely to express their own core patterns of understanding and to use their own metaphors and symbols. Here’s the claim: ‘Common by-products of being asked Clean Language questions are: a state of self-absorption (often an eyes-open trance develops); a sense of connecting with some deep, rarely explored aspects of ourselves; and a sense of wonder, curiosity and awe at the marvellous ingenuity of our unconscious’. You can find the basic Clean Language questions on the CleanChange website or find a fuller exploration in the video here.

Career theories

We all have a few favourite theories but Marc Truyens’ website offers an exceptional list of 84. No need to be daunted: they are tagged into broad categories, each has a succinct but thorough explanation with further links, and as always on this site, they are visually engaging.
