Inspiring Your Continuous Professional Development (CPD) - February 2023

Welcome to the CPD Newsletter for February 2023

CPD is important. It is central to our commitment to serve our clients well. CPD activity meets one of the principles of the CDI Code of Ethics for all CDI members. If you are also on the UK Register of Career Development Professionals there is a 25 hours per year requirement for undertaking and writing a short reflective report in your CPD Record.

Each monthly CPD newsletter focuses on a topic, and provides some suggestions for CPD activities, with links so that you can access or book the activity quickly.

This month: Going Green, but how to do so ethically?

Climate change denial may be (largely) a thing of the past, but that doesn’t mean that the ‘going green’ agenda is straightforward. This month’s newsletter touches into some of the dilemmas, and offers a whole range of resources to support you in your own thinking, understanding and practice.

Blurred lines

In September 2022 the debate about Fossil Free Careers became prominent in the careers sphere, after Birkbeck’s decision to exclude certain employers from careers fairs. This remains a problematic ethical topic for career development practitioners. Chris Webb’s blog on the Career Guidance for Social Justice site gives a useful overview of the various viewpoints: a worthwhile read for personal contemplation or team discussion, and the place to catch the debate if you missed it in the autumn.

Empowering planet-friendly career pathways

Quoting the words of sponsoring body WWF, ‘Sustainable Futures is a free careers programme for UK secondary schools and colleges that equips young people to thrive in a future green economy, regardless of their career path’. David Morgan represents the CDI on the steering group, which has developed a website providing well-structured educational resources along with on-demand CPD resources for careers staff and other teachers.
