Community of Practice for Career Development Professionals

Launched on 1st May 2020 -

What is this Community of Practice all about?

At its simplest, this moderated CoP is a place for CDI members across all parts of our community to network, exchange ideas, ask questions and learn from each other. We hope that it will facilitate professional discussion the length and breadth of the UK, providing an additional professional source of support for CDI members.

Joining through Facebook is easy - It is also a safe space for CDI members only.

The forum has over 900 members and discussion topics have included:
  • Regular fortnightly live #WeAreCareers show with interviews from specialists in career development practice
  • Guidance and coaching with all age groups i.e. adults, young people, special needs
  • Adapting to Covid 19 practice
  • Labour market information for all groups
  • Resources - both those we have used and created
  • Diversity
  • Quality standards
  • How we can promote our profession, often hearing from members about their experiences of using media and social media
  • Regional meetings
  • Books
  • CPD

Comments and feedback from members

  • I am grateful for this group. Somehow, it works much better doing this on FB than on LI.
  • It offers a truly supportive and collegiate space in which we can support each other, share knowledge and celebrate success across the sector.
  • I love it! As a new member, it has given me information on resources and news events that I possibly wouldn't find elsewhere. Also, as a lot of my work is based around Facebook, it pops up in my news feed to I am more likely to see it rather than keep logging into the CDI website.
  • Love it. It feels warm, collaborative, and it’s a mine of useful information - things I want to know and things I didn’t know I wanted to know but do now! Thank you for moderating the page.
  • Highly skilled professionals, who care about what they do, all supporting each other. Love the resources Q&As and the titbits of advice!
  • Really useful information if you've newly qualified. Useful for information on sectors you're not currently working in. You can ask questions without feeling silly.
  • I love the collaboration. It really does feel like we are a community.
  • Good quality questions. Often, (in real-time) drawn to a group because of a FB notification where you can't see the question and you waste time, but not in this group.

How is the CoP managed?

We have appointed Dave Cordle and Liz Reece, both Registered Professional Members to moderate the CoP and provide additional networking and coordination support. This is working well, as one member said: "One of the best groups on FB. So supportive and a place to share ideas, ask questions and keep up to date. It overcomes the isolation - especially in these times. Thank you for moderating."

The CoP has its own fortnightly, live streamed magazine programme #WeAreCareers, managed and delivered by Chris Webb and MeetSabiha. Recordings can be accessed via the CoP Facebook page.
