When working with clients of any age the outcomes and actions of an effective career guidance conversation should enable the client to feel empowered and confident to continue their career exploration journey. This means that the conversation however short or long has the potential to create growth and development for the client and a commitment to actions that can transform the conversation into effective decision making and change. For the career guidance practitioner this means using a range of approaches that support the clients understanding of options and choices carefully balanced with the challenge to the client of how to translate good or limited intentions into meaningful actions. This includes working with clients who have or will face some form of sanction if progress towards work or training cannot been seen.

Get this balance right between support and challenge and the client can benefit significantly from the skilled practitioners questioning, listening, reflecting and exchange of information, options and choices creating a client owned set of actions and outcomes.

Get this balance wrong and you can end up with too much challenge and the client disengaging from the intervention (there in body but not in mind or commitment) or provide too much support and the client feels done to, disempowered and not needing to do anything for themselves, they have been rescued and someone else will take responsibility and make the decisions.

This 1-day programme is designed to help practitioners further master the skills of relationship development, building trust, communication, decision making and gaining commitment for actions that create the best chance of client self-determination.

Learning Outcomes
  • Developing a greater understanding of relationship development and the importance of this in being able to have a more productive guidance conversation.
  • Maximising impact in a short space of time
  • Considering why trust is so important in being able to have a more challenging conversation with clients. Exploring models of trust including Character and Competence models
  • The importance of recognising blind spots and using the support and challenge matrix to help clients reduce their blind spots to enable more effective decision making including working with clients who may not want to be there
  • Decision making tools and techniques to understand more about what motivates people to want to make and take decisions
  • Exploring the notional of disguised compliance and how to effectively challenge clients when it is present
  • Exploring self-determination and motivational models of change, looking at how to help clients tip the balance in favour of making decisions and sustainable change- 5 stage model of change and managing ambivalence
  • Effective client owned goal setting and action planning based upon client accountability for outcomes and creating realistic and measurable progress and distance travelled indicators allowing clients to self monitor and gain further motivation
Target Audience

Anyone working in the sector looking to further their skills in developing relationships that allow effective challenge, motivational techniques, client owned outcomes and self-determination as a lifelong career planning tool. This course will be of particular interest to practitioners working with post-16 clients in learning and/or looking for training/work, and adults who may require additional encouragement and motivation to move into new opportunities.
